The 2018 Expedition Will Look More Like an SUV on the Outside & Work More Like a Truck on the Inside

The all-new 2018 Ford Expedition looks strikingly similar to the Explorer. Once upon a time, these two models had precious little in common, but in the latest generation they could be mistaken for twins.

This is deliberate, so says Ford Large Utility Marketing Manager Craig Patterson: "We're trying to bring Expedition a little bit away from truck, and a little bit into the SUV family—make it a natural evolution for those Explorer customers."

So it looks more like a typical SUV, instead of an F-150 with a bed cap. Technology advancements make the cabin space more entertaining for passengers, too, with the addition of SYNC Connect, Ford's built-in Wi-Fi system.

Deep down under the facelift, however, the 2018 Expedition is more truck-like than ever, in a good way. Like the F-150, it traded its heavy steel body for lightweight aluminum, shedding a net 300 pounds.

"There's a lot more weight savings when you go from steel to aluminum than that," explains Patterson, "but we reinvested it in increasing the passenger carrying capacity, as well as some other capabilities we put into the vehicles."

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine it shares with the F-150 will see increases in power and efficiency, though exact numbers are still being kept under wraps. What we do know is the maximum towing capacity is increasing to 9,300 pounds.

Look for this new addition at Wichita Falls Ford Lincoln this coming fall.
